In 2016, life expectancy at birth for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians was an estimated 71.6 years for males and 75.6 for females. This compared to a life expectancy for non-Indigenous Australians of 80.2 years for males and 83.4 years for females in the same year – a gap of 8.6 years and 7.8 years respectively.
