If you live in a bushfire prone area it is important to be sufficiently prepared for the bushfire season. Part of this preparation involves putting together an Emergency Survival Kit. The aim of this kit is to have items ready that can help you survive a bushfire. Having these items located in the same place will be helpful to both those who choose evacuate and those who stay to defend their home.
The NSW RFS suggests you pack the following items:
Before you leave you should also add:
Overtime some items from first aid kits might be taken out and misplaced. You should make sure your first aid kit is complete. It is also a good idea to make sure there is a P2 mask or cloth (cloth nappy or muslin work well) for each person in your household in case you get caught in smoke. This will filter the smoke and prevent smoke inhalation, which can lead to serious health effects.
If you have pets you will also need to make special considerations for them. Make sure you have a basket, cage or leash ready so that you are able to move them quickly and easily. You should also remember medications, dietary supplements, food and drinking water as well as a familiar item to help reduce stress.
You Emergency Survival Kit should be kept in a waterproof storage contain in an easy to reach location. Make sure everyone knows where it is so that it can be accessed quickly in the case of a bushfire emergency.
