Did you know almost 80% of New Year’s Resolutions fail and chances are that at some point in your life you’ve made a resolution – and then broken it! Some popular New Year’s Resolutions often include exercise, eating healthy, staying positive and completing educational studies. Don’t let the cycle continue and make sure this year you can follow through with your goals. Don’t loose hope after the first couple of weeks. Here are some great tips to ensure your New Year’s resolution is a success:

1. SMART Goals
Make SMART Goals – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-specific.

2. Change your routine
If you want something you’ve never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done.

3. Plan Ahead
Take time to think and plan ahead. What do you really want to change? Visualise the coming months and be prepared for any significant calendar events that may affect your plans.

4. Prepare for temptation 
How will you deal with the temptation to eat that bar of chocolate or miss that exercise class? This could be something as simple as calling a friend for support or imagining how you would feel after you’d given in.

5. Self-monitor your progress
It will help identify your healthy (and unhealthy) habits. No success is too small so keep track of each one. Short-term goals will be easier to keep, and let your accomplishments motivate you. Don’t think about December 2014 – think about getting to next week!

6. Tell your family and friends
They will be your biggest support system and keep you going when you feel like giving up.

7. You are human and we all make mistakes
It is OK if you slip once or twice. Just keep your head up high and focus on keeping on track. 70% of goal-achievers said that their first slip actually strengthened their resolutions.

8. Reward the small achievements
For example, for every 3kg of your 15kg weight loss goal, reward yourself with something tangible such as a new gym outfit.

9. Keep Trying
Don’t despair if you find you are running out of steam, or even if you resolution stops. You can start it again. Give yourself some time and then get ready to recommit for a day – you can do anything for one day! Each day will soon build into weeks…and then months…

10. Stick to It
According to the experts, it takes about 21 days for a new activity to become a habit and about six months for it to become a normal part of your life. So OK, It won’t happen overnight, but understanding that in advance and sticking with it will get you there!
