Types of First Aid

First Aid is a set of first responses appropriate for a range of medical emergency situations.

In Australia, these different types of medical responses are catalogued by the National Register of Vocational and Education Training as units of competencies. By achieving these competencies, you earn a Statement of Attainment.

At Australia Wide First Aid Joondalup, our most popular course is Provide First Aid HLTAID003, which bundles together 2 other units: HLTAID001 and HLTAID002.

Provide CPR HLTAID001 can be studied as a standalone unit, which is just as well because it’s important to renew this particular certification annually.

Provide First Aid HLTAID003 is a more holistic course designed to prepare you for medical hazards and emergencies that occur often in workplaces as well as in everyday situations. It includes how to use First Aid kits in emergency and non-emergency settings.

Basic Emergency Life Support

Provide CPR HLTAID001 – this First Aid unit of competency covers cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR. A lifesaving procedure that combines chest compressions and breaths, it is helpful in many types of emergencies, including cases of cardiac arrest and near drowning. When you’re trained in CPR, you will have the skills to help prevent a casualty from dying or suffering permanent brain damage due to the brain and other major organs being deprived of oxygenated blood.

Provide First Aid HLTAID003 was formerly known as Apply First Aid or Senior First Aid. This is comprehensive training that will equip you with the skills and knowledge to be able to provide appropriate First Aid response, life support, and casualty management. Along with basic life support (DRSABCD), you will learn a variety of First Aid techniques, including management of  fractures, sprains, and strains. You’ll also learn correct First Aid management of allergic reactions and anaphylaxis, and what do in case of envenomation or poisoning, severe bleeding, as well as responding to choking and airway obstruction.

Provide an Emergency Response in an Education and Care Setting HLTAID004 is a First Aid unit of competency specifically designed for teachers and carers. If you’re a parent, with this First Aid course, you can benefit from this child-focused training in incident and casualty management, and learn how to provide appropriate First Aid responses and basic life support.
